In a short session Monday night the Gilman city council approved a building permit for the Gilman Fire Department to build a shed to house a fire engine on the west side of town.

The town has previously stored an engine in a older city shed, which has seen its better days, in the case that firemen would be delayed by a train on the CN/Illinois Central tracks.

A zoning variance was required for the new building and was approved by the zoning committee at a previous hearing.

The council also heard Chris Ishmiel remark on the fact that his pickup which was in the business district Friday night was stolen with some valuables inside.

“What’s it coming to when you can’t keep people safe on the main drag. We need cameras downtown,” Ishmiel said.
