Local residents were stunned Saturday to learn that a young man who had been working the overnight shift at the Gilman Shell and Subway gas station on the west side of the I-57 interchange had been murdered earlier that day.

Jonathan D. Rubin, 27, Danforth was the only employee on duty for the midnight shift when his body was found by a trucker who went to the station for coffee. The 911 call was received by the county at approximately 3:30 a.m.

Gilman police, Iroquois County Sheriff’s officers and state crime scene investigators were on the scene most of the day Saturday and an autopsy was later conducted with the determination that Rubin died as the result of several gunshot wounds.

Iroquois County Coroner Bill Cheatum said Rubin was pronounced dead at the scene 4:25. An exact time of death has not been determined yet by county officials.

Evidence collected at the scene has been forwarded to state crime labs. There are also surveillance tapes

Iroquois County Sheriff Derek Hagen said that county officials have dismissed robbery as a motive for the shooting and are conducting interviews with co-workers and family members.

“Interviews are being done this week which will allow the investigation to move forward,” Hagen said this morning (Wednesday).
